Goal Setting
Short-Term and Long-Term Goals
In Keys to Success, the first key that every inventor must possess is real passion for what he or she is creating. Passion is essential to every inventor’s success because that passion will fuel your perseverance throughout every stage of the invention process. The second crucial key to success is setting both short and long-term goals that are positive and attainable. People throughout our lives have often told us how important it is to have goals, but seldom explain what they are or how to formulate them. That's because goals are really about who you are as a person, and what you decide to do with your time and with your life. The invention process is a time-sensitive process. Goals will help you focus and stay the course throughout the entire process, so it’s essential to understand what goals really are.
What are short-term goals?
Short-term goals are those that you will achieve in the near future. They are daily, weekly and even monthly goals. It’s important that they are achievable and realistic. The importance of short-term goals is that they keep you focused and on track toward achieving your long-term goals and objectives. They also give you a benchmark, the ability to look back and compare last week, last month, and last year in relation to achieving your long-term goals. Write them down. Make them become a part of who you are and what you do. Daily, weekly, and quarterly short-term goals must be accomplished for you to continue moving closer to your long-term goals and objectives.
What are long-term goals?
Long-term goals typically span quarters, one year, five years or twenty years. You will not reach one long-term goal without first accomplishing short-term goals and objectives. It may seem obvious, but the point is, “Where are your short-term goals and have you written them down? How often do you look at your short-term goals and how often do you update them? If you are not establishing your short-term goals and objectives, how do you expect to accomplish your long-term goals and objectives?” We can never underestimate the importance and power of goals. Write them down. Check them daily, weekly, quarterly, yearly. Update them at the same time. Focus and keep your eye on the ball.
