Why would you consider international manufacturing?
The reason is simple, the economics to manufacture compared to domestic manufacturing.
The level of complexity of your concept and/or product will dictate where you will manufacture your product on the large scale. I worked on a project a few years ago and found that I could manufacture and prepare my product for market delivery in my home town of Houston, Texas for about $27.50. I was told by potential distributors and retailers that I should look overseas for manufacturing options. I was reluctant because I felt I had more control and oversight over all activities manufacturing it here. I felt that I could oversee quality control, delivery schedules and variable costs in doing so and I thought I may have been giving up a few dollars in doing so but I felt like it was worth it. Finally, I gave in and decided to look into manufacturing in China and I was extremely surprised in what I found. After numerous emails and meetings with International Agents I realized than I could manufacture, package, bar code, land transport to the docks (China), pay export taxes, pay shipping costs and fees, pay import taxes in L.A., transport to Houston, have delivered to a commercial warehouse, and pay the commercial warehouse fees for approximately $9.70. My associated fixed costs dropped to 1/3 that of U.S. manufacturing. Quality is a factor that you give up but that factor was improving greatly. Retailers will demand that you manufacture internationally, if the demand for your product is high.
